The Federal government has approved a deep seaport in Bonny Island Rivers State, which will be connected by rail to Port Harcourt. The Port Harcourt to Maiduguri Railway line will also be included in the agenda. The Port Harcourt to Maiduguri Railway line will eventually connect Enugu, Benue, Bauchi, and Gombe states, along the line.

A deep seaport and a railway line in Bonny Island will transform the Island into a major economic hub. Bonny Island is already a major crude oil export hub for Nigeria with multinational oil companies stationed on the Island.

The Federal Government is currently building a road with bridges to connect Bonny Island to mainland Port Harcourt.

The Federal Government recently said that all seaports will be connected by railway lines. This will ease the transportation of goods to and from the ports. Learning from the Lagos ports experience where trucks line-up for days on major highways, waiting for their turn to collect goods from the ports. This can be avoided with the building of a railway connection to the ports.
