Editor’s pick: 2014/15 choicest cars
1. BMW X1
Think of this car as a tall 1-series hatchback—rather than a little SUV—with the
familiar BMW traits: a sporty suspension, precise steering, and a choice of
turbocharged engines. But rather than focusing on driving dynamics, the X1
emphasizes fuel efficiency for those who are all for it. The stop-start system is
unrefined and energy-efficient tires yield long braking distances. The standard eight-
speed automatic includes a manual mode; rear- or all-wheel-drive versions are
available. A new BMW X1 debuts later this year.
