According to the 2020 Future of Jobs report by the World Economic Forum Future, looking at global statistics, by 2025 85 million jobs may be displaced by a shift in the division of labor between humans and machines, while 97 million new roles may emerge that are more adapted to the new division of labor between humans, machines and algorithms.

The “Future Trends for Digital Jobs” panel addressed these concerns looking at the implication for jobs specifically in the Kenyan context in an environment already ravaged by COVID induced layoffs. The panel took insights from Perminus Wainaina MD of Corporate Staffing, Nelly Agyemang-Gyamfi the Country Director of Moringa School, Benson Kinoti Developer Training Projects Manager at Google and, Agnes Muthoni the Director of Partnerships at Andela.

Panellists emphasized on the need for employees to gain digital skills not to get the next job but for survival as they can also position one for self-employment. There was also a call to learn advanced digital skills and for companies to offer support in reskilling or upskilling their employees.
