• 1st Mustang built to live on tarmac and play in dirt

    Initially teased at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July with a camouflaged exterior, the Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally has finally been fully disclosed at the IAA Mobility 2023 event in Munich, displaying its sporty and rugged appearance.

    Design-wise, the Mach-E Rally sets itself apart with an updated front fascia featuring fog lights set in a covered grille, a redesigned front splitter, a tow point, a steel roof painted in black, and a sizable rear spoiler similar to the one on the now-discontinued Focus RS. Color options go beyond the featured Grabber Yellow, also including Grabber Blue, Shadow Black, Eruption Green, Star White, and Glacier Gray, all accented with standard racing stripes on the hood and tailgate.

    Visually striking are the new 19-inch gloss white alloy wheels, which not only add aesthetic flair but also feature robust Michelin CrossClimate2 all-season tires for enhanced grip on uneven terrains. The SUV’s suspension is raised by 20 mm (0.8 inches) compared to the Mach-E GT and is equipped with custom springs and MagneRide shocks. Designed for gravel and dirt tracks, the vehicle includes added protective shields for the dual electric motors and optional mud flaps. Door and wheel arch cladding also get a protective film layer.

    The electric drivetrain is an evolved version of the one in the Mach-E GT. While specific performance metrics haven’t been disclosed, Ford has stated that the dual electric motors will generate “at least” 487 hp (358 kW) and 880 Nm (649 lb-ft) of torque. A newly-introduced RallySport Drive Mode aims to permit “larger slides” in off-road settings, accompanied by a “linear throttle response” and “enhanced damping.” Braking is managed by 385 mm (15.2 inches) front discs fitted with red Brembo calipers.

    Energy is drawn from the same 91 kWh lithium-ion battery, although official range numbers will be made public closer to its market debut. It’s expected, however, that the Mach-E Rally’s range may slightly trail behind the Mach-E GT, which has an electric range of 402 km (250 miles).

    Despite its rally heritage, the interior isn’t bare-bones; it retains all standard features found in the basic Mach-E. Special interior elements comprise performance seats with Mach-E Rally branding, contrasting stitching, and gloss white highlights on the dashboard, door panels, and steering wheel that match the wheels.

    Ford has yet to disclose the pricing for the Mach-E Rally but stated that orders will commence in early 2024, with the first batch of vehicles expected to roll out soon after.
