• Spain emerges Nigeria’s top export destination

Spain has emerged as the country’s top export destination, accounting for a remarkable 12.31 per cent of total exports, valued at N1.27 trillion.

This was followed by India with N1.02 billion (9.81 per cent), Netherlands with N988.66 billion (9.56 per cent), Indonesia with N758.59 billion (7.33 per cent) and France with N720.45 billion (6.96 per cent) of total exports.

These five countries collectively accounted for 45.98 per cent of Nigeria’s total exports, demonstrating the country’s growing presence in diverse global markets.

These developments are according to the foreign trade report for the third quarter (Q3) of 2023 released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday.

Meanwhile, China has maintained its status as Nigeria’s top import partner in the third quarter of 2023, accounting for a significant 23.33 per cent of total imports.

“Data on Imports in the third quarter of 2023 reveals that the top five partner countries of origin for imports to Nigeria was China (₦1,973.34 billion or 23.33%), this was followed by imports from Belgium with ₦996.65 billion or 11.78%, India with ₦802.07 billion or 9.48%, Malta with ₦561.37 billion or 6.64% and the United States of America with ₦502.92 billion or 5.95% of total imports,” NBS said.

“The values of imports from the top five countries amounted to ₦4,836.36 billion representing a share of 57.18% of total imports.

“The commodities with the largest values of imported products were ‘Motor Spirit Ordinary’ valued at ₦1,921.03 billion or 22.71%.”

Also included are gas oil worth N736.66 billion or 8.71 per cent and durum wheat (not in seeds), valued at N331.76 billion or 3.92 per cent of total imports.

In a related development, despite the diversification of export destinations, petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude, remained Nigeria’s primary export product, accounting for an impressive 82.50 per cent (N8.54 trillion) of total exports.

However, natural gas, liquefied, and urea, whether or not in aqueous solution, also emerged as significant export earners, contributing 9.82 per cent (N1.02 trillion) and 1.06 per cent (N109.68 billion), respectively, to the overall export value.

  • Africans cross to Spanish islands in record numbers

Huge numbers of migrants have landed on the shores of the Canary Islands in the past few days, according to online sources.

As at Monday, local rescue services counted 1,492 arrivals.

On October 21, more than 1,000 migrants arrived on the Spanish islands.

It is said that of that number, 321 came on the same boat, breaking the record of October 3, when 271 people arrived on a single boat.

The Red Cross said 783 people landed on El Hierro island on Saturday, 98 of that number arrived in Tenerife and 150 in Gran Canaria.

Also, the Gran Canaria Coastguard hauled a wooden boat containing migrants, including a toddler, into the port of Arguineguin.

Similar vessels used by previous arrivals are docked in the port.

An emergency services spokesman said all the migrants were from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Spain’s interior ministry made the claim earlier that 23,537 people reached the Canaries between January 1 and October 15. That signifies an 80 per cent increase from the same period last year, as official data show.

There was a large increase of these crossings over the past four weeks, which saw 8,561 arrivals, the highest number since 2006 during the Cayuco Crisis in which some 6,000 migrants died at sea.

El Hierro, with a population of only 11,000 people, has now emerged as a primary destination, increasing the population.

It saw more than 5,000 arrivals in the first week of this month of October.

Historically, migrants tended to go to Lanzarote but it appears they now prefer El Hierro, as it is further from the Mauritanian and Moroccan shores, making it more difficult for those two nations’ security authorities to intercept them.

    The major cause

The large rise in migration to Spain is partly the result of upheaval in Senegal, where violence erupted after the opposition leader was jailed. That further adds to growing destabilization in the wider Sahel region.

Burkina Faso, Chad, Guinea, Gabon, Mali, Niger and Sudan are currently all ruled by military juntas, following a string of coups in recent years.

So far this year, at least 1,000 people have died attempting the crossing to the Canary Islands, according to the Walking Borders charity.

  • Complaints filed against Luis Rubiales over ‘unsolicited kiss’

Spanish state prosecutors have filed a lawsuit against Luis Rubiales for sexual assault and coercion for kissing a player on the lips without her consent after the Women’s World Cup final, the country’s prosecutors’ office said Friday.

Rubiales, the now-suspended president of the Spanish soccer federation, kissed Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the awards ceremony after Spain beat England to win the title on Aug. 20 in Sydney, Australia.

Prosecutors presented the suit to Spain’s National Court in Madrid two days after Hermoso formally accused him of sexual assault.

According to a sexual consent law passed last year, Rubiales could face a fine or a prison sentence of one to four years if found guilty of sexual assault.

Prosecutors added Friday that Rubiales could have committed an act of coercion when, according to Hermoso, he pressured her to speak out in his defence immediately after the scandal erupted regarding his behaviour.

  • Rubiales kiss furore: Coach Jorge Vilda sacked

The coach of Spain’s FIFA World Cup-winning women’s football team, Jorge Vilda has been fired, less than three weeks after the victory celebration that led to the suspension of the country’s football federation president for kissing a player.

The Spanish football federation offered no immediate explanation for the dismissal on Tuesday (Wednesday NZ time), saying only that Jorge Vilda was “key to the notable growth of women’s football” and thanking him for leading the national team to the World Cup title and to No 2 in the FIFA rankings – their highest ever position.

Vilda was among those who at first applauded federation president Luis Rubiales when he refused to resign despite facing widespread criticism for kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips without her consent during the title celebrations last month in Sydney.

One of Vilda’s assistant coaches, Montse Tomé, was appointed to replace him. She will be the first woman to hold the job.

Rubiales, who also grabbed his crotch in a lewd victory gesture after the final game, has been provisionally suspended by FIFA and faces a Spanish government case against him for the conduct that prompted a storm of criticism and led to widespread calls for his resignation.

Vilda later said Rubiales’ behaviour was improper. Men’s football coach Luis de la Fuente also initially applauded Rubiales for a diatribe against what he called “false feminists.” De la Fuente later apologised and said his applause was an “inexcusable” human error.
