Construction hits snags as roofing, AC disappear

When a roofing contractor returned to a new home construction site on July 20, the Mentor man found that his work trailer had been broken into over the weekend.

The trailer door had been cut and pried open, with nearly $7,000 worth of roofing tools, supplies and other equipment missing, including a Jenny portable air compressor ($3,000), four Maxum nail guns ($1,000), 100 roof jacks, scaffolding, a ladder with six jacks; and a $300 portable stereo radio.

At the same house, the general construction manager for Pulte Homes of Orange reported that an HVAC condenser, valued at $1,200, had also been removed from the side of the same house over the weekend. The Parma man said the electrical and copper supply lines had been cut.

Fraud: Orange Place

Police were called to the Drury Inn & Suites on July 16 regarding a couple who had been guests there for nearly a month, extending their stay 10 times using at least four separate credit cards.

They were scheduled to check out the next day, however hotel management was contacted by the office of a dentist in Livingston, Texas, who reported that at least $845 had been charged to his work account — with the same credit card number as the one used by the couple for most of their stay.

The dentist added that he did not know them or give anyone authorization to use his card. The Cleveland woman, 41, staying in the room, told police that an East Cleveland construction company had been remodeling their home, and when the work had extended past the scheduled June 28 completion date, the contractor agreed to pick up the tab on their room.

The other guest, a Garfield Heights man, 44, went to the police station after work, saying the construction company had paid for the room and he had done nothing wrong. He then declined to give a written statement, opting to contact his attorney.

Police said they left several messages for the contractor at the contact number provided by the woman, who agreed to check out of the hotel. The case was then forwarded to the detective bureau for further review.

Suspicion: Orangewood Drive

A caller reported around 10:15 p.m. on July 21 that he heard what sounded like several kids playing loud music and breaking bottles near the neighborhood park’s tennis courts and pavilion area.

A short time later at the park off of West Ash Lane, police learned that an estimated 30 people had fled. At 10:36 p.m. a group of boys and girls were tracked down near Harvard Road and reportedly ran off again.
