  • Samsung South Africa named as a top employer for Eighth year

Samsung, the most admired technology brand in Africa* has clearly also garnered the respect of its employees, as it has been named by The Top Employers Institute as one of the South African companies that create the best employment conditions for its staff. This is an award it has now achieved for the 8th year in a row. The prestigious Top Employer Certification reaffirms Samsung South Africa’s dedication to providing the very best working environment for employees through progressive “people-first” HR practices.

The Top Employer certification honours companies that have demonstrated high standards in human resources practices, over the last year. Organisations certified as Top Employers dedicate themselves to providing the very best working environment for employees through their progressive “people-first” HR practices. The Top Employers Institute assesses companies on a comprehensive range of employment practices, from the extent of internal training opportunities to mentorship programmes. Companies need to apply to be assessed by the strict criteria used to adjudge the award.

The corporations are judged on specific measures. For example, those that offer international exchange programmes, peer coaching and online work portals, score better. The certification provides employers with an important quality metric for attracting and retaining top talent. They also assess the compensation and benefits offerings as compared to competitors in the industry.

“We’ve been continually investing in programmes and practices that nurture talent and builds leaders. This certification therefore reflects the culmination of many years of focus on our people and creating an environment that nurtures their potential and enhances their skillsets. The collaborative spirit we have created was even sustained over the challenges of lockdowns, during which many of our staff worked from home in the interest of safeguarding their health. Despite the distances they remained committed and worked as if they were in the same building. This benefits our customers greatly. We look forward to maintaining this great symbol of our unity and strength, because together we are stronger,” said Hlubi Shivanda, Operations Director at Samsung Africa.

  • How Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Ultra and S21 may look like

Renders of Samsung’s upcoming flagships, expected to be called the S21 series, have been making the rounds for a while now. The devices are expected to sport massive camera bumps – especially the Galaxy S21 Ultra – which extend all the way to the chassis. Now, new live images have emerged, corroborating earlier reporting and leaked renders.

The images, posted by sakitech on Twitter, reportedly feature the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the S21+ placed next to each other. The larger of the two, the S21 Ultra, features four cameras at the rear, two of which are reportedly telephoto sensor. This falls in line with earlier reporting about the device sporting both a periscope camera for 10X zoom and a secondary 64MP telephoto camera good for 3X zoom. The other two lenses are supposedly the 12MP ultra-wide lens and a second-generation 108MP unit for the main camera.

“The existing service quality of older Samsung Gear wearables cannot be guaranteed and ensured through app updates alone,” it reads (via Android Authority). “Therefore,…

  • How do you sell a $1,000 phone during a pandemic?

Virtual sales pitches and consultations. Touchless in-store device demos. Deals galore. Those are just some of the plans in Samsung’s playbook for selling phones during a pandemic. Last week, the South Korean electronics giant unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 2 alongside the $999 Note 20, the $1,299 Note 20 Ultra, the $649 Galaxy Tab S7 tablet, the $399 Galaxy Watch 3 and the $170 Galaxy Buds Live earbuds. Samsung has already begun taking preorders for the new Notes. Orders should arrive around Aug. 21.

Samsung hasn’t yet detailed pricing or availability for the Z Fold 2, but said it will share more information on Sept. 1. The first generation of the device cost $1,980 and came with 4G in the US. The new model packs in 5G connectivity across the three major US carriers, a glass screen and a redesigned hinge, all of which could make it even more expensive.
