A massive explosion has rocked central Beirut, sending a mushroom cloud of dust into the air, and leaving dozens of people injured.

Videos showed the aftermath of the explosion in the Lebanese capital’s port area, which is right next to the central Downtown area of the city.

The aftershock was felt in the mountains above Beirut, at least 13 miles away, and was so strong it blew out doors and windows in buildings across the city.

Dozens have been injured, according to the AFP news agency reports, quoting a security source, but citing the Lebanese Health Ministry, the Al-Mayadeen channel said the number could be in the hundreds.

An AP photographer at the scene saw injured people at the site of the explosion.

It is unclear what caused the explosion, but security sources told Lebanese pro-Hezbollah TV channel Al-Manar that the blast was due to fireworks stored in Beirut port block number 12.
