According to latest news, former Laguna Beach hotel general manager sexually assaulted an inebriated adolescent. The Laguna Beach Police Department reports the apprehension of a former hotel administrator who allegedly assaulted a teenage female while she was under the influence of alcohol. 

In an official announcement, the department stated that 37-year-old Laguna Niguel resident Phelton Calhoun was detained on Wednesday following a report from a 17-year-old girl regarding an alleged sexual offense. She informed law enforcement that approximately three weeks earlier, Calhoun had raped her while she was intoxicated in Laguna Beach. 

Investigators recognized the suspect as Calhoun, the former general manager of La Casa Del Camino, a seaside hotel situated next to Cress Street Beach. They also discovered he was involved in cocaine distribution and possessed a firearm. 

A search warrant was executed at his residence, where additional narcotics intended for sale and firearms were discovered and confiscated. 

Calhoun has been arrested on charges of rape of an intoxicated individual, statutory rape of a minor more than three years younger, transmitting harmful material to a minor, possession of narcotics for sale, and possession of a firearm along with narcotics. 

He is being held at the Orange County jail without bail, according to police. 

No further information has been released at this time.

Actress Denise Richards has been awarded a temporary restraining order against her estranged spouse, Aaron Phypers, following her allegations of domestic violence and verbal mistreatment, which included presenting the court with images of a bruised eye she suffered. 

Richards, 54, submitted a request for a domestic violence restraining order on Wednesday at Superior Court in California, which was approved the same day. 

Phypers, 49, filed a petition for divorce on July 7. The couple wed in September 2018 and do not have any children together. 

In her petition for the restraining order, Richards detailed multiple instances of abuse occurring from July 4 to July 14. 

Richards stated that on July 4, she informed Phypers that his family needed to vacate the residence they had previously shared, which she had left in 2023. Upon receiving this news, he reportedly became “furious,” began shouting derogatory insults at her, and forcefully grasped her left arm, as detailed in the petition. 

The following day, Phypers appeared at one of her townhouses and confronted her, hurling insults, according to the petition. Later, the document noted that she encountered him in the garage, where he seized both of her arms aggressively and pushed and dragged her to the ground, causing her to fall onto the stairs. Aaron’s father, Steven Phypers, also began to yell at her, threatening to inform the media and the internet that she was a “whore,” as stated in her petition. 

Richards claimed within the petition that Phypers “consistently abused me throughout the marriage” and “threatened to take my life as well as his and that of the police. ” 

She claimed he possessed at least eight unregistered firearms. 

Richards also recounted an incident of abuse on May 21 when, she alleged, Phypers accessed her iCloud account, captured images of her private text messages, and transferred them to his own laptop while she was asleep. 

Phypers then awakened her and yelled insults at her, according to the petition. Later, while she was using the bathroom, he “struck” the top of her head with his palm and continuously shouted at her to surrender her phone, she alleged. 

Richards detailed in the petition that Phypers frequently “violently choked me, viciously squeezed my head with both hands, tightly clasped my arms, aggressively slapped my face and head, forcefully slammed my head into the bathroom towel rack, and threatened to end my life. ” 

He routinely threatened to “break” her jaw and would “cry, plead with me to remain, and promise to seek help — none of which ever materialized,” the petition asserted. 

She claimed that Phypers inflicted at least three concussions upon her.

Prince Al-Waleed bin Khalid Al-Saud, commonly referred to as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” has died at the age of 36, more than twenty years following a catastrophic automobile accident in London that left him in a coma. 

The prince, who was only 15 years old at the time of the incident in 2005, experienced a brain hemorrhage and internal bleeding. 

He never regained full awareness and had been on a ventilator since then. 

His father, Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, confirmed the tragic news in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday. 

Quoting a passage from the Quran, he wrote: “With hearts believing in Allah’s will and decree, and with profound sorrow and grief, we mourn our cherished son: Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah grant him mercy, who departed today. ” 

Before the incident, Prince Al-Waleed had been enrolled in a military college in London. 

Following the crash, he was transported to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, where he remained in a coma under continuous medical supervision. 

Despite his son’s prolonged condition, Prince Khaled never relinquished hope of recovery and resisted numerous appeals to withdraw life support. 

Images released over the years depicted Prince Al-Waleed lying in a hospital bed, often surrounded by family members who continued to provide care for him. His case garnered extensive attention across the Arab world, where he became a symbol of hope and faith.

In a significant advancement towards modernizing digital governance and improving accessibility to public services, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy has introduced the Nigeria Web Design Standards (NWDS) initiative. 

This project, developed in collaboration with the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), seeks to establish a cohesive, user-friendly, and secure framework for all federal government websites. 

During a one-day stakeholders’ workshop, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, underscored the vital role of digital tools in fostering trust between citizens and the government. 

“Citizens trust governments that assist them efficiently. In this digital era, technology is the most potent instrument for delivering that service,” Tijani remarked. “Web platforms frequently represent the initial point of interaction for citizens. If they are perplexing or inconsistent, they undermine trust. This initiative is aimed at rectifying that. ” 

Tijani advocated for an inclusive and collaborative design of government digital platforms, emphasizing the necessity for tools that embody the needs and values of citizens. 

NITDA Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, stated that the initiative intends to transform digital service delivery by abolishing the fragmented and inconsistent web designs presently utilized by various government entities. 

“In the absence of defined standards, agencies function in isolation, creating platforms with diverse layouts and navigation. This frustrates users,” Abdullahi elaborated. “Standardization will facilitate the development of reusable components, thereby simplifying the creation of accessible and citizen-friendly websites. ” 

Chairman of the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, emphasized the project’s potential to drastically enhance public service delivery. 

“Nations that have adopted digital coherence have experienced significant advancements in governance. Nigeria must follow suit—providing a singular, integrated platform where citizens can effortlessly access services,” he stated. 

Referencing the UK government’s digital portal as a benchmark, Aig-Imoukhuede asserted that standardized platforms not only boost usability but also strengthen public trust. 

Commending the Minister’s visionary leadership, he expressed, “An effective government website is no longer a luxury—it is imperative. As more Nigerians engage online, the government must be prepared to meet them where they are—digitally. ” 

Reflecting on his personal experiences in developing digital platforms within the private sector, Aig-Imoukhuede described the NWDS project as a transformative opportunity for how Nigerians engage with their government—visually, structurally, and institutionally. 

Chioma Njoku, Director of Programmes at the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, provided an overview of the Foundation’s mission to promote public sector transformation. She highlighted that the initiative aligns with the Foundation’s vision of bridging development gaps through technical assistance, partnerships, and capacity-building. 

“Young individuals must perceive public service as a realm of opportunity, not frustration. Through this and other initiatives, we aspire to inspire a new generation to have faith in public service and national transformation,” she stated.

Former robber turned Georgetown law educator convicted of domestic abuse. A Georgetown University law educator who served 11 years in incarceration for bank robbery prior to becoming a lawyer was found guilty on Friday of criminal offenses related to a September 2023 domestic violence incident, which followed years of mistreatment. 

Shon Hopwood, 50, was determined guilty by a District of Columbia Superior Court jury on three counts of simple assault, five counts of contempt, and two counts of obstructing justice, federal prosecutors in Washington stated in a press release on Friday. 

“A D. C. jury is insisting on accountability from the perpetrator who not only assaulted his spouse but was also part of the faculty at Georgetown Law instructing on criminal law,” U. S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro expressed in a statement following the verdict announcement. “This D. C. jury wasn’t intimidated to demand accountability regardless of the defendant’s identity. ” 

According to a press release from the U. S. Attorney’s Office, on Sept. 21, 2023, Hopwood and his spouse engaged in a dispute in front of their children. When she attempted to retrieve her phone and handbag from their bedroom, he purportedly attacked her, pushing and throwing her into the kitchen on multiple occasions. 

His spouse sustained numerous injuries from the attack, including bruises. 

Three days later, D. C. police became aware of the assault during a welfare check. Hopwood instructed his wife to remain in the basement and coached their children to mislead authorities about her whereabouts during the check, as reported by the news statement. Subsequently, Hopwood fled from the residence upon hearing on an officer’s radio that the police had located his wife. 

Following an investigation, D. C. police and the Attorney’s Office revealed that Hopwood had a history of persistent emotional and physical domestic abuse towards his wife, extending over several years. The defendant was also charged with, and found guilty of, assaulting the victim in April 2023 in addition to the September 2023 episode. 

Hopwood’s trial was scheduled to commence in early June, but his wife and their daughter did not appear in court despite a subpoena. Authorities reported that they discovered Hopwood had been communicating with his wife and exerting pressure on her not to testify in his trial, thereby violating a stay-away order. 

Hopwood was prominently featured in the 2019 “60 Minutes” segment, “Meet a Convicted Felon Who Became a Georgetown Law Professor. ” 

The news program characterized him as “arguably the most successful jailhouse lawyer ever — having had one of his cases argued before the U. S. Supreme Court while serving a 12-year sentence for armed bank robbery. ” 

As of Saturday, Hopwood continued to be listed as an associate professor of law on the Georgetown Law School website. 

In a statement to WTOP, a spokesperson from the law school remarked, “Domestic violence is horrific and contrary to our values as an institution. Shon Hopwood remains on leave from his position as professor, and we will review the situation and adhere to all pertinent personnel procedures. ” 

The representative stated that Georgetown Law honors the judicial system and the jury’s verdict. “Aside from that, we are unable to provide commentary on employment issues. ” Hopwood’s sentencing is set for September 18, 2025.
